写意 (xiěyì) means to "write meaning" and is one of the styles of traditional Chinese painting.
In traditional Chinese painting, the ink, brush and paper react in unique ways with each other. An experienced artist can pick out exactly where the first brush stroke was made, the second, third and so on. Because of this unique interchange between the materials, mastery comes from making each brush stroke with intention but with also a lightness knowing that the result will always contain an amount of unpredictability. The artist must stay in the moment, capturing the spirit and liveliness of it's subjects using brush, ink, and paper.
